Iconic US coffee retailer Starbucks has renewed its interest in the Indian market . The world’s largest coffee retailer is said to have engaged in preliminary talks with a clutch of domestic corporates with interests in retail and real estate, including the Bharti Group, DLF Retail , DB Realty and Jubilant Group, said sources directly familiar with the matter.
“Starbucks is discussing India plans with potential partners, including Sunil Mittal’s Bharti,” said two separate sources who did not wish to be named as talks were private. The negotiations are in a preliminary stage and it will be incorrect to suggest Starbucks has identified or shortlisted any firms, sources added. Another person familiar with the development said Starbucks has made a fresh approach to Indian business groups in the past two months. A detailed email query to Starbucks on its India plans remained unanswered, while a Bharti Group spokesman said, “We do not comment on speculation.”

Significantly, Starbucks’ renewed interest in the India market comes at a time when company CEO Howard Schultz, at its biennial investor conference in New York on December 1, said that the retailer was in discussions with potential partners to open stores in India. The company revealed a new business plan at the investor meeting which will focus on major acquisition and expansion activities. Industry sources indicated that Starbucks was prepared to take the franchise route.
